Hard Lessons from the Founder's Chair

Nobody hands you a manual when you start a company. The real education happens in the trenches. Here are four lessons I've learned the hard way.

 


 

1. Expect Everything. Predict Nothing.

A deal falls through overnight. A key hire quits on a Tuesday. Then a cold email you almost didn't send becomes your biggest partnership.

The game isn't about predicting what happens — it's about how well you respond when it does. Adaptability isn't a soft skill for founders, it's a survival skill. The founders who last aren't the ones with the best plans. They're the ones who absorb a gut punch and still make clear decisions.

 


 

2. Strategy Is a Living Thing

Here's a hierarchy most founders learn too late: Strategising is important. Sticking to it is even more important — consistency builds momentum, and constantly chasing the next idea is how startups die quietly. Executing is critical. But knowing when to change your strategy is the whole game.

The trap is confusing commitment with rigidity. The best founders hold their strategy firmly enough to build momentum, but loosely enough to let reality in when it speaks. Ask yourself: Am I still executing, or am I just avoiding the conversation?

 


 

3. Right Beats Fast. Wrong Beats Nothing.

There's enormous pressure to move fast. Speed matters — but not at the cost of direction. A fast wrong decision doesn't save time, it compounds it.

But being wrong is not failure, it's data. Every wrong decision is one step closer to the right one. Wrong decision + reflection = insight. Wrong decision + defensiveness = repeated mistake.

 


 

4. The Hardest Skill: Knowing When You're Wrong

The ability to look at a situation and say — I got this wrong — is rarer than any technical skill. This means letting go of the identity you've built around a decision and trusting that recalibrating is strength, not weakness. The founder who doubles down on a failing strategy because admitting the truth feels too costly will always lose to the one who can say "we need to rethink this" and genuinely means it.

Reflection isn't a luxury. It's a discipline.

 


 

Adaptability. Discipline. Patience. Honesty. None of these are headline-grabbing traits — but they're the invisible infrastructure underneath every company that actually makes it.
